The conservative Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, the first woman Head of State in the former Yugoslav country, sworn in as the new president of North Macedonia today during a ceremony in Parliament in Skopje.
In the Assembly of North Macedonia, in addition to the deputies, the highest representatives of the judiciary and the executive, religious leaders, as well as ambassadors of foreign countries were also present at the inaugural session.
“I declare that I will carry out the duty of the President of Macedonia conscientiously and responsibly, I will respect the Constitution and the laws and I will protect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Macedonia”, said Siljanovska-Davkova, not using the constitutional name ‘North Macedonia’ ‘.
This caused the Greek ambassador, Sophia Philippidou, to leave the Assembly hall, after North Macedonia and Greece in June 2018 signed the Prespa Agreement, according to which Macedonia changed its name to North Macedonia, while Greece removed its veto for the country’s membership. in NATO.
In her speech to the audience, Siljanovska-Davkova stated that she will be president of all, without making distinctions on any basis, while she also dedicated part of her speech to women, stressing that she will aim to inspire women in the country her and in the Balkans, where, according to her, patriarchy is still present.
After the speech in the Assembly of North Macedonia, the official handover ceremony was held in the President’s Cabinet, where the current president, Stevo Pendarovski, and the newly elected president, Siljanovska-Davkova, also had a bilateral meeting.
