Albania’s decision to continue the path of EU membership will bring it even closer to Greece, said Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias during the international Regional Growth Conference.
“I would ask you not to see Greek-Albanian relations in the context of Albanians being friends with the Turks, so they are automatically not friends of Greece. It is much more complicated than that. And if I may say, Albania historically – and if you look at it in perspective – has made its choice,” he said during the conference.
“The fact that it ardently wishes to become a member of the European family, which means co-signing all the decisions of the European acquis, shows where Albania will be 50, 100, 150 years from now. And you will see that Albania has an indicator of significant compliance with the foreign policy decisions of the European Union,” the foreign minister added.
“So, yes, Albania has close relations with Turkey. Yes, Edi Rama has personal relations with President Erdoğan. We know this. But that does not mean that there is not a huge ground for improving Greek-Albanian relations. And let me tell you – I will say it again – Albania is doing what I wish Turkey would also decide to do at some point, to turn towards Europe, to embrace European values and to try to become a member of the European family,” he added
