TIRANA, September 13– Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, in the speech held at the ELIAMEP international conference entitled “The prospects of EU membership of the Western Balkans in the light of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine” sent a message to Albania regarding Fredi Beleri’s issue.
He said that Greece “cannot accept candidate countries that do not meet the membership criteria and mainly the essential principles of the European community such as democracy and the rule of law”.
“Undoubtedly, there are cases where attitudes and practices suggest that these principles have yet to be embraced by all candidate countries. The Mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, is the same case, as you probably know. Albania must show that it respects the rights of the Greek national minority and the rule of law. This conference is taking place at a pivotal moment. In the coming time, EU enlargement will be at the top of the agenda in the EU institutions. Greece’s clear position will bring the spirit of the Thessaloniki agenda to this debate. We will take initiatives and approve any ideas or proposals aimed at revitalizing the enlargement process, making it more concrete, consistent and credible, while also ensuring sincere cooperation from all parties and a clear timeline for membership”, said the Greek Foreign Minister.
