Pope Francis Endorses Creation of Sovereign Bektashi State in Historic Meeting with Global Leader
In a landmark meeting, Pope Francis met with the Global Bektashi Leader, His Holiness Haxhi Dede Edmond Brahimaj, where the Pope expressed his blessing for the creation of a sovereign Bektashi state. Journalists present at the meeting reported that Pope Francis called the idea a “beautiful initiative,” marking the first open endorsement by the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church for this concept.
The so-called “Bektashi state” would seek formal recognition of the Bektashi Order’s cultural and spiritual identity, which is deeply rooted in Sufi Islam. The Bektashi Order, with its significant presence in Albania, aims to preserve its heritage, promote interfaith harmony, and serve as a global center for its followers. Pope Francis’ endorsement holds particular significance not only for the Catholic community in Albania but also for broader interfaith relations globally.
In addition to discussing the potential creation of the Bektashi state, Pope Francis and Brahimaj jointly signed the Abu Dhabi Human Fraternity Document. Originally signed in 2019, the document promotes global peace, interfaith dialogue, and cooperation, underscoring the importance of human dignity, tolerance, and environmental stewardship. This joint signing further solidified their commitment to fostering unity across religions and cultures.
