TIRANA, 4 December 2023 – The leaders’ meeting was held in the Assembly of North Macedonia, where the heads of parliamentary political parties were invited.
As Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski said after the meeting, they discussed the European integration of North Macedonia, changes to the Electoral Code in accordance with OSCE/ODIHR recommendations, as well as the date of regular presidential and parliamentary elections that will are held in 2024.
“What we found in the meeting is that the regular elections will be held on April 24, namely the first round of presidential elections, and May 8 for the second round of presidential and parliamentary elections. According to the law, from January 28 there will be a technical government, that is, the ‘Perzhino government’ and the legal obligation that I have as prime minister will be fulfilled and of course the coalition agreement will also be fulfilled”, said Prime Minister Kovacevski.
The chairman of the largest opposition party VMRO-DPMNE, Hristijan Mickoski, said that three important conclusions were reached at the leaders’ meeting. Speaking about the need to approve constitutional amendments, as a condition for continuing the country’s European integration path, he said that at this moment the conditions for constitutional changes have not been created.
He also said that an agreement was reached on changes to the Electoral Code in accordance with the recommendations of the OSCE and ODIHR, but he emphasized that the rule that the changes should be approved 6 months before the start of the election campaign was not respected.
“We agreed that the first round of presidential elections will be held on April 24, 2024, while the second round of presidential elections together with parliamentary elections will be held on May 8, 2024,” Mickoski said.
