TIRANA, September 8 – After the 24-hour deadline set by the Albanian government, the diplomatic and technical staff of the Iranian Embassy in Tirana left Albania on Thursday. The premises of the embassy were placed under the control of the RENEA forces, the Anti-Explosive and Anti-Terror Unit, who carried out checks in the entire building rented by the Iranian embassy in Albania.
Only a few Albanian employees were found inside the premises, while the Iranian diplomats left on Thursday morning before the deadline set by the Albanian government.
A part of the diplomats left from Rinas airport, while the rest left by land going to North Macedonia.
The decision to sever diplomatic relations with Iran and expel its diplomats from Albania was given on Wednesday morning by the Prime Minister, Edi Rama, who said that it was proven that Iran was behind the July 15 cyber attacks on the online services system of this Balkan country.
The decision of the Albanian government to cut diplomatic relations with Iran and the order to expel its diplomatic staff from the country was welcomed by the US, Britain and NATO chief.
So far there is no reaction from the neighboring countries or those who take part in the initiative Open Balkans launched by Albania, Serbia and North Macedonia. /Argumentum.al
