TIRANA, May 24 – Minister of Justice Ulsi Manja has informed about the agreement with Great Britain for the transfer to Albania of persons convicted there.
In a statement to the media on Wednesday, after the government meeting, Manja said that “the agreement we have reached is a technical agreement that completes the agreement on the transfer of convicted Albanian persons from Great Britain to Albania ratified in the Assembly in 2021.”
The minister emphasized that the main purpose of the agreement is for these Albanian citizens convicted by British justice to come and serve the remainder of their sentence close to their family members and relatives.
According to him, this agreement makes it possible that within the capacities that Albania has in its prisons, they can come through the procedures provided by the law to serve the remainder of the sentence in Albania.
He assured that the agreement does not create any cost for the state budget, because all costs and expenses will be made by the British side for each day of stay and serving the sentence in Albania.
Asked about the amnesty in prisons, Manja informed that he has set up a working group in the General Directorate of prisons and the Ministry of Justice and after reviewing the issue with the government and the Assembly there will be an amnesty project. /argumentum.al
