TIRANA, November 19 – The Ministry of Justice said on Sunday that the information circulating in the media about an agreement with Italy for the transfer of convicts is incorrect.
In a press release, the Ministry of Justice emphasized that “no new agreement was signed at the Manja-Nordio meeting”.
“Albania has an extradition and transfer agreement with Italy and we cooperate normally. The number mentioned is the number of Albanians who are in Italian prisons and the respective authorities will cooperate for joint education programs,” said the Ministry of Justice in its statement.
Earlier it was reported by the Italian media that Albania and Italy have agreed and are close to signing an agreement, which will allow the transfer of 1950 Albanian prisoners to Albanian prisons.
The news was given after a visit made by the Minister of Justice, Ulsi Manja to Italy on November 14.
“The political agreement is there! Now technicians will have to translate it into implementation procedures. Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio and his Albanian counterpart Ulsi Manja reached an agreement at the headquarters of the ministry in Arenula in Rome that will allow the transfer of 1950 Albanian prisoners to the prisons of their country of origin,” said the Italian media. /argumentum.al
