“Breaking: Albanian court rejected lawsuit of Turkish dam investor! This means the Kalivac dam project is dead and Vjosa is safe! #VjosaNationalParkNow. ”
The news was first announced by activist Ulrich Eichelmann, CEO of Riverwatch, on Twitter on May 28, 2021.
The Administrative Court of Tirana rejected on Friday as unfounded the lawsuit brought by the Kalivaç HPP developer, Turkish-Albanian consortium Ayen-Alb, against the Albanian Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
The lawsuit contested the Albanian Ministry of Tourism and Environment’s Negative Environmental Declaration, a declaration that rejected Ayen-Alb’s environmental assessment impact, thus halting construction of the dam indefinitely.
EcoAlbania, an environmental NGO that had filed an amicus brief in support of the Ministry’s decision, confirmed the news through a press release.
Since 2012, River Watch has been working on protecting Europe’s last free-flowing river jewels – the Balkan Rivers – from a massive dam craze.
“In cooperation with the German foundation EuroNatur and together with local partners in the Balkans countries, we have been running the campaign “Save the Blue Heart of Europe” in order to prevent this scheme of destruction,” said River Watch. /argumentum.al
