It is no exaggeration to say that Albania is seen as a world leader when it comes to religious freedom and interfaith harmony. This was declared by the US Ambassador, Yuri Kim, who attended the “Brotherhood in Humanism” forum of the Interfaith Council held on Thursday.
“As we mark the 100th anniversary of the US-Albania relations this year, I will take every opportunity to emphasize our shared values of tolerance and inclusion,” Kim said, adding that Albania has been seen on the global stage as a member of the UN Security Council speaking out on human rights and human security worldwide this year.According to her, the voice of Albanians is particularly strong because of the history and values of their country. She referred to the Albanian tradition of faith (besa) and protection of Jewish refugees during World War II. Albania has defended religious freedom and the rights of religious minorities, she said. “Based on this tradition, Albania is welcoming over 2,200 Afghans who fled the Taliban last summer. The Albanian people have always embraced the opportunity to help a group of people in need.”
Kim said the tradition of tolerance, acceptance and cooperation continues to this day as evidenced by the Interfaith Council that represents the five main religious groups in Albania, which is a productive model to imitate. She commended the Council for its excellent work in promoting interfaith dialogue and harmony, both at home and abroad.
