TIRANA – In a rare event for Albania’s political scene over the latest years, the heads of the majority and opposition were face to face on Wednesday in a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) organized by President Ilir Meta to review the current state of the coronavirus pandemic in this Balkan country.
The assessment of the current state of the pandemic, the measures being taken to address the economic and social consequences, the development of the educational process and the strategy planned for the conclusion of the 2019-2020 academic year and the proposed changes to the Criminal Code were part of the agenda of the meeting, said a press release issued by the presidential press office.
Prime Minister Edi Rama and the head of the lines ministers informed about the measures taken to cope with the health and socio-economic crisis, as well as the further management of the situation. The Speaker, Gramoz Ruci expressed his commitment to fulfill the obligations of the parliament in this situation. The press release said that the chairman of the Democratic Party, Lulsim Basha, expressed the views and suggestions of the opposition to overcome this pandemic with the easiest possible consequences for the citizens and the economy of the country.
President Meta, according to the announcement of the presidency, praised the importance of increasing the efficiency of measures, through awareness, transparency, all-inclusiveness and increasing the spirit of cooperation, as the major common objective is to protect the health of citizens, the national economy, and the end of the school year.
“I thank the citizens for their understanding and cooperation which must continue for the common interest. The more efficient this cooperation is, the sooner we will return to normalcy and full of life. Together we will succeed,” said Meta.
This was the second meeting of the National Security Council organized by the President regarding coronavirus and the measures taken by the government. Albania has confirmed 494 cases of COVID-19 and 25 casualties while 248 patients have recovered.
In a comment in a post on his FB account on Wednesday’s meeting, which is the second organized by the President regarding coronavirus, Premier Edi Rama said it was useful for an open exchange of opinions with the President and the DP head on the gradual opening of the activities in the next weeks.
