TIRANA – “Statements on the approval without consensus of the electoral reform are intended to create political obstacles to the adoption of the reform,” have said the Democratic Party (DP) and the Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI) in a letter sent to the ruling Socialist Party (SP) which demand the convening of the Political Council on the electoral reform this week.
DP’s Oerd Bylykbashi and SMI’s Petrit Vasili sent the letter with opposition’s requests to SP’s Damian Gjiknur and Rudina Hajdari, an opposition MP in parliament, setting May 31 as the final deadline for the completion of the reform.
In the letter, the opposition proposes a meeting of the Political Council on Sunday or Monday, as well as the establishment of a new calendar for the completion of the reform on May 31.
The details of the letter are as following: “Confirmation to hold the next meeting of the Working Group of the Political Council, on Sunday, 10.05.2020, at 11:00 am, or on Monday, 11.05.2020 at 10:00 an under this agenda: “Re-assigning of the work calendar of the Political Council, aiming to complete the work by May 31, 2020; evaluation of the majority representatives on the current proposals of the opposition made in the previous meetings of the Political Council; other issues proposed by members of the Political Council.”
There was an immediate positive response by the co-chair of the Parliamentary Commission for Electoral Reform, Damian Gjiknuri on Thursday who said that after getting acquainted with the letter through the media, “we express our appreciation for your readiness to resume the work of the Political Council for Electoral Reform”.
Gjiknuri’s letter said: “This new attitude of yours should be welcomed as a serious reflection in relation to your public statements made in recent days and we welcome it without reservation.”
Sources from the Political Council told Argumentum.al that the meeting will be held on Monday at 10:00 am. The meeting will take place online as a result of the anti-coronavirus ban. Electoral reform was halted on March 9 as a result of the coronavirus pandemics./argumentum.al
