TIRANA, July 9 – The assumption of office by the new Foreign Minister of Greece, George Gerapetritis, has been accompanied with threatening tones towards Albania in the deliberations of the Hellenic Parliament.
As he presented his platform on international relations with an extroverted diplomacy approach in the next four years, Dendia’s successor touched upon the Greek-Albanian relationship, pointing the finger at the case of the Himara Mayor, Fredi Beleri, who is behind bars.
According to Gerapetritis, Fredi Beleri’s arrest will affect bilateral relations and in the course of its progress, Greece will decide whether or not to condition Albania’s path to the European Union. “Albania must respect the rule of law if it really wants to become part of the European family.”
Greece’s top diplomat also pledged that they will do everything for Beleri’s release from prison.
“Greece remains committed to the development, security and prosperity of the Western Balkans and will continue to take initiatives to accelerate their European path. Especially in relation to Albania, we will do everything necessary to end the ongoing detention of the Mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri. Albania must respect the rule of law if it really wants to become part of the European family,” said Gerapetritis in Parliament. /argumentum.al
