TIRANA, September 9 – Representatives of the opposition, anti-communist associations, residents of Shkodra, northern Albania, commemorated the 77th anniversary of the Postriba Uprising.
During the ceremony wreaths were placed at the memorial commemorating the martyrs of the communist massacre.
Present at the ceremony was the former Mayor of the Municipality of Shkodra, Bardh Spahia, who said that the first spark of resistance was ignited from this area where the sons of Postriba dared to stand up for freedom and called for unity against the evil installed in Albania. Spahia said that September 9 is an important historical date that marked the first uprising for freedom in Europe against the most brutal communist regime.
Faz Shabaj, the chairman of the association “Postriba” and the chairman of the association of the ex-persecuted people, Zenel Drangu, asked for the finding of those martyrs’ remains that still do not have a grave.
On September 9, 1946, the first anti-communist uprising in Albania was organized in Postriba. The resistance movement was mainly driven by the clergy with the support of nationalist elements.
