Teaching aids for visually impaired and blind children, catering and rehabilitation equipment for nursing homes run by Sisters of Mother Teresa, as well as renovation of the Tirana high school’s gym are the results of implemented development projects financed by the “Polish Aid” Programme of the Polish Embassy in Tirana in 2023.
The Ramazan Kabashi educational center is a unique address on the map of Tirana. It is the only school in the country where visually impaired and blind children, aged 7-15, can learn. The center is headed by director and activist for the rights of blind people, Emiliano Lule, president of the “VISIUM Institute for the Blinds”. In addition to educational and pedagogical activities, the center creates educational materials in Albanian, adapted for blind and visually impaired people. As a result of the institution’s cooperation with the Polish Embassy, the school obtained equipment supporting the preparation of teaching and learning materials adapted to people with visual impairments, including: a professional screen used by students with impaired color vision and visual impairments, as well as microphones for a recording studio where audio descriptions of educational materials and audiobooks in Albanian are created.
In Albania, the Missionaries of Charity, widely known as Sisters of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, provide help to the poorest and excluded people who remain outside of the institutional care system. The nursing homes run by Sisters are a refuge for the elderly, the sick and those with physical and mental disabilities. Seven permanent nursing homes in Tirana, Shkodër, Durrës, Elbasan, Rrëshen and Puka provide such individuals with housing, food and rehabilitation assistance. Thanks to financing from the Polish Aid programme, nursing homes in Tirana, Shkodër and Puka received new kitchen equipment, including gas stoves, refrigerators and furniture adapted to serving meals to bedridden people. As part of the project, new rehabilitation equipment was also purchased, which will significantly facilitate mobility of those most in need.
In 2023, Tirana was the European Capital of Sports. The Embassy of the Republic of Poland decided to make its small contribution to a number of events and sports activities organized by the Municipality of Tirana and implemented a project to renovate a gym at the “Ismail Qemali” high school in Tirana. Thanks to the cooperation of the Embassy and the Municipality, the necessary renovation work was carried out, including replacing the parquet floor and covering it with a special laminate, as well as installing ladders, which will certainly improve safety and increase the comfort of the school’s students in sports.
