TIRANA, May 17 – President Ilir Meta focused in a press conference on Tuesday on aspects of the secret agreement of May 17, 2017 between Prime Minister Edi Rama and the chairman of the Democratic Party (DP) at the time, Lulzim Basha.
The deliberate and long-coordinated boycott of the opposition parliamentary mandates and the boycott of the local elections were part of that deal, which granted the state party absolute control, not only over all municipalities, but also 100% of municipal councils.
He also added that the sale of the April 25 elections to the government for a long time, even by silently breaking the open agreement of June 5, was undoubtedly part of the agreement of 5 years ago. “It was part of this agreement that the boycott of justice reform by the opposition facilitated the full capture of the new justice by the current government. The consequences are known to everyone.”
“I am sure that next May 17 will be something else, it will be exactly like that, we will never forget that shameful agreement that happened in the dark 5 years ago against democracy, against the rule of law, against the system of accountability in this country,” stressed Meta.
Asked about the calls of Prime Minister Edi Rama to SPAK to investigate Sali Berisha and that the whole of Albania is waiting for Ilir Meta to go to justice, the President said that what Albanians expect is a leadership that keeps its word; Albanians expect accountability from everyone.
Meta concluded by saying that after July 24 it is certain that Ilir Meta and not only him but also thousands, tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of Albanians will go to SPAK, will go before the courts with evidence, not with political statements. /Argumentum.al
