President Ilir Meta has described the phenomenon of depopulation as the biggest drama that has taken place in the country in the last decade.
Through a status on social networks on Friday, he said that a quick reflection and concrete solutions are needed to stop that.
Meta quoted the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies saying that about 500 thousand citizens left, several times more than in other countries in the region, from 2010 to 2019.
“Stopping the depopulation of Albania, the biggest drama that has happened to the country in the last decade, is the biggest challenge, which requires urgent reflection and concrete solutions,” said the President.
According to the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies, from 2010 to 2019, about 500,000 citizens left Albania, several times more than in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Kosovo.
The evacuation of Albania risks turning into a national disaster if these dramatic rates continue.
“It is an immediate emergency to address this phenomenon and any further negligence would have catastrophic consequences,” Meta said. /argumentum.al
