President Ilir Meta has called on government institutions to take urgent measures in view of the grave situation created by heavy rain and floods in Albania over the latest days.
According to the data on the recent rainfalls, hundreds of hectares of land are flooded in the regions of Tirana, Shkodra, Lezha, Kruja, Fier, Gjirokastra, Saranda, Durres, Vlora, etc.
A post of President Meta in social networks said that it is extreme irresponsibility and legally punishable that the alarm of the Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment on the risk of floods in the country, with very serious consequences, is not being taken seriously by government institutions.
“Even today, no senior government official has officially communicated with the population to inform them of the measures taken to cope with this difficult situation,” he said.
He spoke of serious problems which highlight corrupt abuses reflected in the poor quality of investments, mainly in drainage networks.
“In the conditions when, according to all forecasts, the situation is expected to worsen, I strongly urge the Government, relevant ministries, Prefectures and Municipalities to take immediately and without justified delays all necessary measures to guarantee the protection of life, health and citizens’ property,” Meta noted.
President publicly called on the Prosecution to be vigilant of any cases of abuse of office by public officials.
In conclusion the head of state said that
taking into account the serious consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic
the life, health and property of citizens, should be an absolute priority. /argumentum.al
