The friendship and support of the United States of America has been vital for the advancement of democratic aspirations, the strengthening of the rule of law and the stability of institutions in Albania, stated Prime Minister Edi Rama addressing the virtual Summit for Democracy on Thursday.
The two – day Summit, attended by leaders of over 100 states, among which Albania and Kosovo, was organized by the US President, Joe Biden.
Rama stressed that the Albanian government is fully committed to guaranteeing the successful continuation of justice reform, so that, according to him, “a new justice system, impartial and independent of the executive and legislative power becomes fully functional to serve the people.” On the other hand, he said they are committed to fighting corruption and organized crime at all levels.
According to him, this is the reason why EU membership negotiations will help consolidate democratic institutions, protect fundamental rights and advance the rule of law.
“Albania’s strong multilateralism was demonstrated during the COVID-19 crisis and most recently, during the Afghan crisis, when we were the first to say we were ready and decided to give shelter to thousands of evacuees,” Rama said.
In conclusion he said: “While Albania will take its place as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council during the years 2022-2023, we rely on your commitment to multilateralism to make the UN function better and to find practical but lasting solutions to peace.” / Argumentum.al
