TIRANA, February 9, 2023 – After several days of verification of the two reports of the government and the Socialist Party (SP) on the event of January 21, 2011, the Special Prosecutor’s Office, SPAK has assessed that it is not competent to investigate the case and sent the materials to the Prosecutor’s Office of Tirana.
SPAK did not find sufficient evidence in the materials so far for the implication of the former Prime Minister, Sali Berisha and the former Minister of the Interior, Lulzim Basha, both accused of murder in what the majority calls a state crime, the killing of 4 protesters in the protest of January 21, according to a report by TV Klan on Thursday.
On the other hand, the criminal offense of murder is an accusation that, without the involvement of an official or former high official, is investigated by the District Prosecutor’s Offices in every other case.
With these arguments, the two reports are already in the hands of the capital’s prosecution and will go through another phase of verification. Meanwhile, the Prosecutor’s Office of Tirana has an open investigation into the case of January 21 and is conducting investigative actions for the murder of two protesters, Aleks Nika and Hekuran Deda, for which there is still no perpetrator.
The Government and the Socialist Party sent reports to SPAK after the publication of an audio where it is claimed that there are conversations about the order given to shoot at the protest of January 21, 2011, being considered as new evidence, which has not yet been administered by the prosecution. /Argumentum.al
