The Speaker of Parliament, Lindita Nikolla, received Monica Merino, the new resident representative of UNDP in Tirana on Tuesday.
The Speaker thanked Merino for UNDP cooperation with the Parliament, Government and institutions of Albania for advancing the 2030 Agenda to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate change and promoting gender equality and economic, political and social participation of women in the development of the country as well as cooperation with regional and local authorities through various social and economic projects to improve the quality of life of the population.
“The Parliament is grateful to UNDP and other UN agencies in Albania for their cooperation in drafting and adopting legislation on child protection, gender-based violence, asylum seekers, etc. The fight against gender-based violence, domestic violence, violence against women and children is one of my priorities as Speaker of Parliament and for these issues we will advance and expand cooperation with UNDP,” said Nikolla.
For her part, Monica Merino thanked Nikolla for evaluating the Parliament’s cooperation with UNDP and other UN agencies and underlined that this cooperation will continue to deepen to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals, climate change, gender equality and the fight against violence against women.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for all the people of the world. The SDGs aim to end all forms of hunger and malnutrition by 2030, making sure all people – especially children -have sufficient and nutritious food all year. / Argumentum.al
