The first round of voting for the presidential elections is taking place in North Macedonia.
Ballot boxes across the country opened at 07:00 at 3,480 polling stations and voting will continue until 19:00.
In the seventh presidential election, 1,814,317 voters have the right to vote and can choose one of the seven presidential candidates.
According to the laws, the winner is declared in the first round of voting only if one of the candidates has won more than 50 percent of the votes from all registered voters. If this does not happen, the second round of elections takes place, in which the two candidates with the most votes from the first round compete. The participation in the second round of the presidential elections must be over 40 percent, for the vote to be considered valid.
According to the Constitution, the presidential candidate must be over 40 years old and a resident of the country for at least 10 of the last 15 years. A presidential term lasts 5 years and a president can serve for a maximum of two terms.
If no winner is declared in the first round of voting, the second round is scheduled to be held on May 8, the day when the parliamentary elections in North Macedonia were also announced.
