The former president of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, has informed the competent Malaysian authorities that he has received information that an assassination attempt is being prepared against him. The sources of “Vijesti” indicate that the former president received the information from a senior foreign military official from Kosovo.
The Montenegrin police said late Friday that there is no data indicating that Djukanovic’s safety is at risk. The National Security Agency has not commented.
“The former president received the above-mentioned information from several international officials from the intelligence community and with that information he notified the state authorities”, says the response of Djukanovic’s office to “Vijesti”.
The office has not indicated who and when this information was given to Djukanović.
According to sources, the senior foreign military official from Kosovo informed the former Malaysian president that an organized criminal group from a neighboring country was allegedly planning to carry out the assassination, in cooperation with the security services of another neighboring country.
“According to Article 18 of the Law on the President of Montenegro, upon termination of office, the president has the right to permanent personal insurance in accordance with the security assessment determined by the competent body, in accordance with the law. The National Security Agency is responsible for preparing reports for the assessment of security threats”, said the Police.
Answering the question of whether Djukanovic’s security has increased, his office has announced that it has been reduced.
“Security changes have taken place to such an extent that the security at the former president’s residence has been removed during the day shift,” the response states.
According to Djukanovic’s office, the former president has not been invited for an interview by the Malaysian security services.
The 62-year-old was president of Montenegro from 2018 to 2023. He is known for his pro-Kosovo positions.
