The Union of Albanian Journalists (UAJ) strongly condemns the acts of vandalism and threats against journalists following the escalation of the situation in northern Kosovo. Today’s violent attacks against journalists from the Albanian national TV station Top Channel, as well as violent actions against several colleagues from Kosovo in Zveçan, constitute a dangerous development.
Four journalists of Top Channel were attacked as they were inside their vehicle. The aggressive behavior and vandalization of the vehicle by extremist disruptors presented a serious threat to the journalists lives.
The Union of Albanian Journalists expresses its full solidarity with the journalists of Top Channel, all our colleagues in Kosovo, and everyone else that is committed to professionally reporting about the disturbing developments in northern Kosovo.
The Union of Albanian Journalists calls on all regional, European and international organizations of journalists to react and strongly to condemn the organized vandal acts of extremists against journalists performing their duty. It is imperative that everyone joins in solidarity with journalists in Kosovo, as they are facing aggressiveness from criminal groups, and strong threats from nationalist extremists that aim to increase tensions and destabilize the region.
The Union of Albanian Journalists appeals for prudence, objectivity, and professional courage. We call on all our colleagues to respect the norms and laws of the Republic of Kosovo’s during their reporting.
Moreover, we ask the international institutions and representatives that are present in Kosovo, especially NATO, KFOR and EULEX Kosovo, to guarantee the safety, security of journalists in Kosovo, and their right to freely report from the terrain.
