TIRANA, October 7 – The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Laws has said that the threats against judges and prosecutors are worrying as they are serious and should be taken into consideration.
She said in a talk show on News 24 TV on Saturday that the ‘networks’ of crime are afraid of justice, considering the crackdown on criminal gangs.
“Threats against prosecutors and judges are very disturbing. It will be necessary for us as the Law Commission to act in order to prevent and combat these phenomena. These are serious threats that must be taken into consideration, as it shows us that the networks of crime have been disturbed and justice is taking action.
According to her, the Assembly and the Law Commission have been supporting prosecutors and judges for their safety.
“We as a commission will have to provide support for the implementation of the law. We have made recommendations for the implementation of the protection and security of judges and prosecutors,” said Bushka.
The prosecutor of Special Anti-Corruption Structure, Doloreza Musabelliu, and former Lushnja’s prosecutor Merita Selimi, as well as a lawyer have been threatened recently by organized crime in Albania. It was the repentant justice, Artan Tafani, part of Laert Haxhiu’s gang of hitmen, who confessed the group’s plans to eliminate prosecutor Musabelliu.
The EU delegation in Albania has expressed its deep concern about the threats made to the justice authorities. “We welcome the commitment of the Albanian authorities to quickly investigate these threats and hold the perpetrators accountable,” said a statement released by the EU mission in Tirana.
In the meantime the US Embassy in Tirana has also expressed its deep worry over the threats of violence against law enforcement officials who are working to make Albania safe and more democratic. In a statement, the embassy underscored the need for a justice system that is free of fear and intimidation, and affirmed its unwavering support for Albania’s law enforcement officials ‘bravely fighting corruption and organized crime’. /argumentum.al
