TIRANA, November 10 – The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj was received on Wednesday by Pope Francis in the Vatican. The mayor was accompanied by the Tirana “European Youth Capital 2022” team on that visit.
Invited by Pope Francis within the framework of the Year of Youth, Veliaj introduced him to the news about the construction of the monument to Saint Mother Teresa in the hills of the Artificial Lake.
Meanwhile, Pope Francis appreciated the fact that Albania protected the Jews during the Second World War, while today it is doing the same with Iranians, Afghans and Ukrainians. He was very impressed by his visit to Tirana a few years ago, and remembered it with great longing to return.
In a post on social networks, Veliaj wrote about the special meeting: “It was an extraordinary pleasure to meet Pope Francis in the Vatican together with the team of the Capital of Youth – full of memories of Pope’s first apostolic visit to Tirana and the impressions of an Albania that runs in brotherhood of faith, despite the bitter past.” /Argumentum.al
