TIRANA, August 9 – Two important judicial institutions of Albania which have been established as part of the ongoing judiciary reform that goes for more than 6 years, have been placed under the protections of the forces of the Guard of the Republic.
The forces of the Guard will replace the units of the State Police to protect the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO) and Special Prosecution against Corruption (SPAK) according to a government decision which was made public on Tuesday bearing the signature of the former Deputy PM, Arben Ahmetaj.
Ahmetaj was dismissed a few days ago being replaced by Belindaj Balluku who is also minister of energy and transport. No reasons are made public for the dismissals but there is hearsay that he is involved in the corrupt affair of the incinerators, a scandal in which PM Edi Rama is allegedly involved.
Opposition is pressing SPAK to expedite procedures for the investigations into the scheme but the authority is unnerved by the appeals saying no word what is happening with that scandalous case. Besides GJKKO and SPAK two vetting institutions- the Independent Qualification Commission and the Appeals Chamber are protected by the Guard of the Republic.
