A visit to the northern city of Shkodra on Thursday was an opportunity for the US Ambassador, Yuri Kim to repeat the appeal for the formation of the Constitutional Court as soon as possible.
Ambassador Kim launched that call after a meeting with the Mayor of Shkodra, Voltana Ademi, who is the only local leader belonging to the opposition Democratic Party becoming often the target of the arrows of criticism of PM Edi Rama.
“Albania has long been without a Constitutional Court and this is not an acceptable situation for a NATO member country that aims to join the European Union. As I have said before the opinion of the Venice Commission has given opportunity to move forward and we are very pleased that the Speaker of Parliament Ruçi has agreed that the Constitutional Court should be established by the end of the year,” said Ambassador Kim.
In addition she told reporters that she had discussed with Ademi the problems regarding the recent pandemic situation and the importance of political participation.
Ms. Kim stressed the importance for political leaders to put aside divisions and unite for a common cause and the importance that young people should never lose hope.
She expressed satisfaction with the recent development of political parties to meet and discuss other developments in electoral reform.
Ambassador Kim revealed that she would stay in Shkodra for two days to visit all the tourist sites of the city./argumentum.al
