TIRANA, June 3 – The White House revealed a phone call between the Deputy National Security Advisor of the United States, Jonathan Finer and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti during which Finer expressed the concern of the United States of America for the situation in the north of Kosovo , and made two specific requests to Kurti, said an official announcement released on Saturday by the US government.
Finer has asked the government of Kosovo to enable newly elected mayors of municipalities to perform their duties from alternative locations and to withdraw police forces from municipal buildings, said the announcement.
The White House announced that the Prime Minister of Kosovo agreed with the request to repeat the elections in the 4 municipalities of North Kosovo. Finer also welcomed Prime Minister Kurti’s willingness to work on the terms of new elections.
The request for new elections was made to President Vjosa Osmani by German Chancellor Scholtz and French President Macron in a meeting with Serbian President Vučić during the Moldova summit, a meeting that showed the EU’s avoidance of Albin Kurti after he rejected continuous requests for calm situation in the north.
The White House also said Finer called on all parties to take steps aimed at de-escalating the situation. He reiterated that the United States expects both sides to re-engage in the EU-facilitated dialogue and fully implement the normalization agreement reached in Brussels and Ohrid, North Macedonia, earlier this year. /argumentum.al
