Premier Hoti Urges Appeal for Election of President within December

Kosovo Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti has called on political parties to agree as soon as possible on election of the new president, saying that solving this issue in January will be late.
Ms. Vjosa Osmani has been Acting President since early November when Kosovo Hashim Thaci resigned to face war crimes charges in The Hague. According to the Constitution, the new president must be elected within six months.
Political parties have not yet agreed on how to proceed with the issue, said Gazeta Express. The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), which leads the government, insists on an agreement between political parties. The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), which is part of the ruling coalition, has nominated its leader, Ramush Haradinaj, for president. Meanwhile, the largest opposition party, Vetevendosje, says new parliamentary elections should be held and then the president elected.
Hoti said in a press conference on Monday that the Constitution of Kosovo says clearly that this situation can continue for a maximum of six months. “But we should not wait for the last day. We must solve this issue on time so that the country is not left without institutions,” he said. “I believe that January is too late for overcoming the situation," said Kosovo PM. /
