Top European Media Official Worried over Media Freedom in Albania

The Secretary General of the European Federation of Journalists, Ricardo Gutierrez has said that media pluralism is very endangered in Albania.

"The Albanian government must promote democratic values. Albania is not recognized as a country that stimulates media freedom, on the contrary Albania is becoming a champion of lawsuits against journalists. Albania has sued independent journalists. Media pluralism is endangered in Albania," Secretary Gutierrez said on a virtual talk show on Syri TV on Tuesday. According to him, there are only 2-3 media outlets that can report the public interest, while others are affiliated with the government and businessmen and there is no accountability by politicians and businessmen.

"There are cases of arrest of journalists in Albania, there are a total of 26 lawsuits against media people. Journalists in Albania are self-censored and journalists are not guilty of this, but politicians must create a spirit of freedom in support of media freedom. Rama should implement 30 points of recommendations," declared Gutierrez. / argumentum.al
