The US Ambassador to Albania, Yuri Kim, has sent a letter to the leaders of Albania’s political parties, reminding them that they are responsible for the persons they nominate as candidates for MPs in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
“We encourage all political parties to vet candidates and nominate only those that are qualified and respect the Albanian voters,” she said in the letter dated August 31, 202o, which added that while the individual is responsible to disclose his criminal history, party leaders should ensure the integrity and veracity of declarations.
Referring to the Decriminalization Law the letter said that the bill sets forth that people convicted, prosecuted, or with criminal records in Albania or abroad are not eligible to be appointed in public positions that is elected by the people or appointed in position within the public administration or institutions set forth in the Constitution or other legal acts.
The Ambassador said that the US is committed to fighting corruption and stands with anyone who seeks to stop corrupt officials from acting illegally and with impunity. “We will continue to designate individuals for significant corruption under Section 7031 (c) of the annual appropriations bill.”
She said the US values Albania as a friend, partner and NATO Ally and also strongly supports its aspiration to join the EU.
